Project Overview:
I led the design of a research report exposing violence against Native Hawaiian women and girls, translating 120+ pages of findings into a 24-page advocacy report.
This document was presented at the State Legislature as a part of the Hawaiian Caucus, and was featured on the front page of the Honolulu Star Advertiser

The Crisis
The Crisis
The Crisis
Native Hawaiian women and girls have been murdered and gone missing at alarming rates, but the crisis remains largely invisible. Underreporting, inconsistent data collection, and limited media coverage have created what advocates call an "invisible crisis"—violence that's documented but not acknowledged, systemic but not addressed. The Missing and Murdered Native Hawaiian Women and Girls (MMNHWG) Task Force was formed to change that.

After months of research, they had findings—120+ pages of dense research in a Word document with no images and no visual structure and needed to present to the legislature before the 2023 Legislative Session. What they didn't have was a way to make those findings impossible to ignore.

My role was to translate that into a public-facing document that could serve multiple audiences: legislators who needed policy justification, media who needed compelling angles, advocates who needed momentum, and the public who needed to understand the scale of what had been ignored.

The Challenge
The report needed to serve multiple audiences simultaneously. Each stakeholder had different needs and expectations, but all required the same thing—credibility.
The constraints were significant: 120+ pages of research findings needed to become 24 pages maximum. The content was sensitive, requiring balance between emotional impact and institutional credibility. The timeline was tight to align with coordinated MMIWG2S awareness efforts.

How do you make systemic violence legible without sensationalizing it? How do you create urgency without losing institutional credibility? The design needed to make this crisis impossible to ignore while honoring the dignity of the women and girls whose stories were being to

I explored multiple directions like symbolic imagery like red dresses on the beach (powerful within the movement but abstract to outsiders), and protest imagery alone (urgent but lacking geographic specificity).

The final cover combined protest imagery with Diamond Head in the background. Human faces made it personal. Diamond Head grounded it geographically because this is Hawaiʻi-specific violence requiring Hawaiʻi-specific action. The protest signs communicated urgency immediately: even before opening the report, you understand this is about systemic violence and demands for change.

The timeline documented 19 critical moments from 400 CE to 2022: the expansion of sex trade in Hawaiʻi, colonial impact, and systemic failures that created conditions for murdered and missing Native Hawaiian women and girls.

Events clustered in certain eras and required different levels of detail. The solution used color-coding by time periods to help readers orient themselves across centuries, with a non-linear layout that allowed for visual pacing and emphasis on critical inflection points. This required multiple iterations as the research team refined what needed to be highlighted.

Legislators and media don't read reports cover to cover, they skim for pullable quotes, headline statistics, and clear recommendations. The design used visual emphasis on key findings through size, color, and placement.
The goal: someone could flip through this report in 3 minutes and understand the scope of the crisis and what needed to happen next.

Section breaks with clear headers let readers jump to relevant content. Strategic use of red (connecting to the MMIWG movement's symbolic use of red dresses) created visual through-line and hierarchy. White space prevented cognitive overload.

On December 15, 2022, the report was presented by State Legislators and key MMNHWG Task Force members at a public press conference. Attendees included government officials from the Hawaiʻi State House and Senate, representatives from the Hawaiʻi State Commission on the Status of Women, and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
The report made the front page of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (Hawaiʻi's largest newspaper), received coverage across local and some national news channels, and was cited in government resources as a reference document. It was distributed in both print and downloadable PDF format.

The report brought systemic attention to violence that had been underreported and underacknowledged. By making data accessible and undeniable, it created space for public conversation and institutional accountability. Community organizations and advocates now had a citable, credible resource to reference in meetings, share with media, and use to apply pressure for change.
This report signaled that murdered and missing Native Hawaiian women and girls was no longer a fringe issue, it was a documented crisis requiring government response. While I don't have data on specific policy changes or funding allocations that resulted directly from this report, the press conference and media coverage demonstrate that it entered public discourse and reached decision-makers.
